Here at the Michael Davitt Museum you will experience a formal and informal element to learning. We offer educational tours to suit all ages. Immerse yourself in a tale of triumph over adversity in 19th Century Ireland. The museum is housed in a pre-penal church and adjoining the impressive ruins of Straide Friary. It’s the ideal environment to educate inquisitive minds. The museum tells the story of a man whose life was transformed by education.
Michael Davitt was a child of the great famine who became a champion of the oppressed worldwide. A Patron of Celtic Football Club, a Fenian, a Land Agitator, an Author, a Journalist and an International Humanitarian, the collection reflects his diverse range of national and international achievements in an awe-inspiring tale of triumph over adversity.
Our tailored tours offer primary, post primary and third level students the opportunity to engage with a wide variety of events in Irish history. Upon request our tours can encompass diverse, but connected historical themes. The First Settlers in Ireland, Early Christianity, Brehon Law, the Norman Invasion, the Plantations, the Great Famine, the life of Michael Davitt incorporating the Land War, the Land League and Home Rule. We also have exhibits pertaining to the War of Independence, the partition of Ireland and the Civil War. From First Settlers to Christianity, Invasion and Subjugation, Famine to Freedom, the Michael Davitt Museum is a place to engage with history.
