History from the 13th Century
Adjacent to the Michael Davitt Museum is the magnificent 13th Century Straide Friary.
There is a 13th century chancel with seven lancet windows in the surviving church, but the rest of the building dates from a 15th century restoration.
A visit to the Friary allows you to reconnect with Medieval Ireland, marvel at intricate Gothic Architecture, and explore a richly decorated Pieta and Tomb.
You’ll get to visit the final resting place of ‘Tadgh Dall O’Huiginn, also known as the ‘Matchstick Man’. But most of all, a visit to the Friary will leave you astounded by tales of death, destruction, despair and hope.
